CHAPTER ELEVEN
KATHY HAD A kink in her neck. Her eyes were closed and the heater in the house was running. She hadn’t realized how loud the unit was before. She couldn’t hear anyone in the house. And Grandpa Ed’s house was never quiet, except in the wee hours of the morning.
She rolled her head and reached for her blanket. The back of her hand hit something hard. Her eyes flew open and she sat up only to be jerked back in place.
She wasn’t at home. She wasn’t in her bed. She was in Dylan’s truck.
“Hey, there.” Dylan shot his arm in front of her as if she was in danger of lurching forward and hurting herself. “You don’t do anything slow, do you?” He’d taken his jacket vest off and rolled up his brown flannel sleeves. His muscled forearm brushed the skin beneath her neck as he withdrew.
The air became thick and heavy in her lungs. “How long have I been asleep?” They were in slow-moving traffic on what looked like the highway in Santa Rosa.
“About an hour.”
Wasn’t she the life of the party? “Where is this place you’re taking me?”
“About twenty minutes back the other way.”
“But...that means... You kept driving just so I could sleep?” She turned in her seat to face him.
He worked his jaw. “Don’t take this wrong, but you looked like you could use the rest.”
Kathy slumped in her seat. She’d always been a bit vain about her appearance. She’d always been meticulous about the clothes she wore. “Put me in mom jeans and donate my makeup to those less fortunate. All I need to complete this proud moment is for you to tell me I drooled.” She touched the shoulder of her jacket. It was wet. Great.
Dylan’s look was knowing, but he said, “I didn’t see you drool.”
She groaned. “That means I snored, too.”
“It was more like a nose whistle,” he deadpanned, exiting the freeway. “Are you hungry? I’m in desperate need of a burger.”
Her stomach growled in agreement. “I should get home. Flynn will be worried about me.” She didn’t want Truman to worry, either.
“Call home.”
“I don’t have a cell.”
“Use mine.” He gestured toward the center console.
“And tell them what? I’m out with a man I just met a few days ago?” Everything that had felt loose and relaxed when she’d woken up now felt tense and strained. “That’ll go over well.”
“Call home.”
Kathy’s stomach growled a second time. “All right. But I don’t have any money on me for dinner.”
“My treat. You look like...”
“If you say I look like I need to eat...” Her fingers clenched the loose denim at her thighs. She hadn’t realized how baggy her jeans had become.
“Been hearing that a lot lately, have you?”
“You have no idea.” She forced her fingers to relax.
Dylan pulled into a run-down burger joint as Kathy finished calling Flynn. “This is the best-kept secret in Sonoma County. They have chili-cheese fries that’ll make you want to cry they’re so good.”
“Please. The next thing you’ll be telling me is that they have root-beer floats with real ice cream.
